    Eleanor Boyle Ewing Sherman

    American Catholic organizer

    Eleanor Boyle Ewing Sherman (October 4, 1824 – November 28, 1888) was the wife of General William Tecumseh Sherman, a leading Union general in the American Civil War.

    She was also a prominent figure of the times in her own right.

  • Early years

    Eleanor (nickname, "Ellen") Boyle Ewing was born in Lancaster, Ohio, the daughter of prominent Whig politician Thomas Ewing and Maria Boyle Ewing. Her parents also raised her future husband, William Tecumseh "Cump" Sherman, after the 1829 death of his father.

    She was educated primarily in Lancaster, OH and Washington, D.C.. In 1832, while her mother Maria was visiting her husband in DC, Ellen was sent to a convent school in Somerset run by Dominican Sisters, much to her apparent displeasure.

    During her many months stay, Ellen got so homesick that she ended up hopping on a stagecoach by herself in the hopes that she could make her way back to Lancaster, OH to visit her h
