Valdis Zatlers, a trauma orthopedic specialist by profession, was elected as the 7th President of Latvia on May 31, 2007, and assumed office on July 8, 2007.

He graduated from the Riga Medical Institute in 1979 and underwent a six-month internship at Yale University and Syracuse University in the United States in 1990-1991. Zatlers worked as a trauma orthopedic physician at the Second Riga Hospital from 1979 to 1985.

He later became the head of the Traumatology Department from 1985 to 1994 and the Chairman of the Board of the Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital from 1994 onwards. Zatlers also taught at the Stradina Univ
